This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of composite materials, including their properties, manufacturing methods, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical behavior. Composite materials, composed of two or more distinct phases combined in a controlled manner, have become essential in modern engineering due to their exceptional characteristics, such as high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent thermal and chemical resistance, and mechanical properties that can be tailored to specific needs.
The module is structured into five chapters, each focusing on a specific aspect of composite materials. We will begin by exploring the fundamental concepts of composites, including their definition, general characteristics, and classification. Next, we will examine the constituent elements of polymer-matrix composites, such as matrices, reinforcing fibers, and additives. The manufacturing process will then be addressed, with particular attention to different implementation techniques. Finally, we will analyze the elastic properties and mechanical behavior of composites, highlighting the relationship between their structure and performance.
This module is designed to provide students with a complete overview of composite materials, from design to practical application, preparing them to meet the challenges encountered in modern industries.
