This course introduces Urban Design through a typomorphological approach. It examines the historical evolution of urban form—from Roman antiquity and medieval medinas to classical, nineteenth-century, modernist and post-modern cities—focusing on the relationship between building types, urban tissue and the block. Students explore key theoretical frameworks (Italian and French schools), the processes of formation and transformation of urban form, the dissolution of the traditional block, and selected Algerian case studies. The course also addresses the foundations of urban landscape and atmosphere, culminating in the development of design intentions at the scale of the urban fragment.
