Vegetative propagation, also called vegetative reproduction, is a method of multiplication
that allows plant organisms to multiply without sexual reproduction (plant biogenesis).
Vegetative propagation is a form of asexual reproduction that generates new individuals
possessing the same genome and which are therefore clones, hence the term
clonal reproduction.
Vegetative propagation is also a natural phenomenon often and for a long time used by
humans to clone plants; it is the basis of many plant biotechnologies.
Vegetative propagation is a natural phenomenon: these processes, found mainly in herbaceous and woody plants (trees and shrubs), most often involve structural modifications of the stem. Roots and other underground organs can also contribute to vegetative propagation, and in some plants, such as succulents, even the leaves are used.
In the broadest sense, all plants are clonal, thus challenging the view of plants as individuals. Due to the late specialization of their cells (totipotency) and their modular organization, where each module comprises somatic and meristematic tissues, all plants can be regenerated from any part of themselves. Provocatively, it is tempting to say that all plant organisms are colonial. Vegetative propagation can be considered as fixing, for offspring, the characteristics acquired by an organism during the vicissitudes of sexual reproduction. Indeed, the processes involved allow, except in exceptional cases, the permanence of the genotypic stock in a population descended from an individual with a given hereditary heritage.- Teacher: kebour djamila
